Measuring the Cognitive and Memory-Enhancing Effects of Dietary Supplements

Available: On Demand

Description:

The pharmaceutical industry routinely uses sensitive automated tests of memory and cognitive function to determine whether new medicines will have positive or negative effects in study subjects and patients. Such rigorous methods can now also be applied to nutritional supplements to quantify their effect on memory and cognition.

Professor Wesnes will review the considerable work he and his colleagues have pioneered and conducted in this field over the past 20 years and Dr. Udani will describe the methods for implementing these procedures into dietary supplement clinical trials. Together they will provide a validated and structured format for evaluating the efficacy of dietary supplements in order to substantiate claims in this field.

Speakers:

Keith Wesnes graduated from Reading University in 1973 with a first class bachelor's degree in experimental psychology. He then undertook a MRC funded doctorate using nicotine and scopolamine to identify the role of the cholinergic system in human attention. From 1976-1986 he worked as a research fellow at Reading University and from 1983-1986 at Guy’s Hospital. During this time he developed automated cognitive function tests, validating them in both volunteer and clinical populations, and applying them to clinical trials.

Wesnes became a chartered psychologist in 1988, was made fellow of the British Psychological Society in 1989 and fellow of the Royal Statistical Society in 1983. He belongs to thirteen other societies, associations and colleges. He has published more than 180 peer-reviewed research articles as well as more than 20 chapters and literature reviews.

Wesnes developed and validated the world’s first microcomputer-based cognitive assessment system to have proven sensitivity for assessing both improvements and impairments in volunteer and patient populations. In 1986 he founded Cognitive Drug Research to offer this system as a service in clinical trials .

Jay Udani, MD, C.P.I., is the CEO and medical director of Medicus Research, a clinical trial CRO serving the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and functional foods industries since 2001. Udani is a board certified internist who was the chief resident of internal medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, was the first fellow in integrative medicine at Cedars Sinai, and was among the first physicians in the country to become a Certified Physician Investigator (C.P.I.) for clinical trials through the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians. He has personally run dozens of clinical trials and published over 30 book chapters and articles in many prestigious medical journals including JAMA. Udani is also the recipient of the AMA National Achievement Award, the Harvard Medical School Pinkney Fellowship in orthopaedic research, and was voted Best Physician Specialist and Best Medical Speaker in Los Angeles by the Daily News.
