Antioxidants are substances that may protect the body from the effects of free radicals, molecules that can damage cells, and may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Antioxidants are produced by the body and are found in many foods, including fruits and vegetables; antioxidant substances include carotenoids, flavonoids and vitamins (vitamin C, vitamin E).
