SALT LAKE CITY—The United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA) congratulated the American Botanical Council (ABC) on its 25th anniversary and 100th publication of its journal HerbalGram. Founded in 1988 by Mark Blumenthal, the Texas-based non-profit promotes science-based herbal medicine with thousands of members around the globe.
“Mark’s vision and ABC’s steadfast and enduring message about responsible, research-based botanical medicine has grown and resonates with supporters of natural medicine around the world," said UNPA president Loren Israelsen. “Congratulations to Mark and the ABC team for reaching these milestones. The UNPA membership and staff look forward to ABC’s leadership and contributions for many more years to come."
Long-time industry activist Israelsen said he still has the check he signed to support ABC in its infancy. "Who knew that 25 years later, the global botanical industry would still seek out ABC as the go-to source for facts, reasoned opinions and scientific oversight?" he said.
Since its inception, ABC has provided crucial resources such as the HerbalGram journal, the HerbClip service and the HerbMedPro database to its users. The organization was also instrumental in developing the American herbal medicine movement with its he compilation, translation and publication of "The Complete German Commission E Monographs – Therapeutic Guide to Herbal Medicines."
Blumenthal is a key member in the botanical industry, providing insight and lobbying for herbal education. Hear him discuss botanical identification methods at the 2013 SupplySide West in the INSIDER Video: The Best Way to ID Botanicals.
