OSLO, Norway—The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) established areas in the Southern Ocean as marine protected at its fall 2011 meeting. The designation is designed to preserve the ecosystem and further conservation goals in the Antarctic ecosystem while also ensuring the krill fishery will be able to continue sustainable harvesting practices in the region.
"The establishment of protected areas in the Southern Ocean will benefit all players in the krill fishery," said Sigve Nordrum, senior vice president and sustainability director for Aker BioMarine Antarctic. Nordrum added that Aker BioMarine Antarctic has worked with CCAMLR as well as conservation organizations including WWF-Norway to maintain a sustainable krill fishery and support scientific research. For instance Aker donates its krill trawler to researchers form CCAMLR and the Institute of Marine Research and the Marine Research Assessment Group (MRAG) in the Southern Ocean for five days annually to investigate krill.
