Americans Want Healthy, Tasty Snack Foods


PRINCETON, N.J.—In the debate between snacks that taste good and better-for-you snacks, 63% of U.S. consumers would rather eat a snack that appeals to their sense of taste over healthier snacks, and 60% admit to eating more than the recommended portion, according to results of a new market survey.

According to the “Rethink Your Snack Survey" conducted by Kelton Research on behalf of Pretzel Crisps’®, 59% of Americans prefer to keep their snack choices interesting and sample a variety of treats. Results also reveal 40% of Americans prefer to reach for snack foods throughout the day instead of eating the traditional three square meals; 78% admit to eating snack foods for lunch, while 55% eat snacks for dinner.

While Americans love their snacks, 86% take the health content of their snack foods into consideration. When selecting small bites, calories (55%) and fat (48%) are the top two pieces of nutritional information Americans look for, while carbohydrates (31 %) are far less important. More than half of Americans (57%) reach for salty treats over sweet indulgences.

“When it comes to snacking, people want something that tastes good, satisfies their cravings and doesn't make them feel guilty for eating it, even if they overindulge a little," said Perry Abbenante, vice president of marketing for Pretzel Crisps.
