PHOENIX—VIRGO announced the SupplySide West 2011 Scientific Excellence Awards will be presented to Maypro Industries for Oligonol®, SEPPIC Inc. for CERAMOSIDES™, and Biothera for Wellmune WGP® at SupplySide West, Oct. 10 to 14 in Las Vegas at The Venetian & Sands Expo.
Ingredient suppliers and technology providers with new ingredients or technologies, as well as those with new research or applications for established ingredients or technologies submitted applications for the award. Panelists evaluated the submissions on science/research methods, scientific breakthrough, innovation and appeal for the manufacturing community.
Awards will be presented to the following winners at 2 p.m. in the VIRGO booth, #22061, on Wednesday, Oct. 12:
Maypro’s Oligonol®, manufactured from the extract of lychee fruit and green tea, is the world’s first commercially produced low-molecular-weight polyphenol. The patented oligomerization process entails taking long chain polymers and breaking them down into monomers, dimers, and trimers, thereby reducing its molecular weight and improving the polyphenol’s absorption into the body. Consequently, the compound delivers unparalleled bioavailability and its efficacy is now supported by multiple human clinical studies. Oligonol received a letter of no objection from FDA for its status as a new dietary ingredient (NDI); it is also GRAS (generally recognized as safe) self-affirmed. Oligonol was introduced into the Japanese market in 2006 and into U.S. market in 2008. The ingredient is now sold in the health food store, multi-level marketing and health care professional channels in the United States and Japan. It is also used in a beverage product, in a number of functional foods and in several cosmetic products. New research published in February 2011 in Phytotherapy Research suggests “flavonol-rich lychee fruit extract seems to protect against oxidative stress and tissue damage and may be useful as a dietary supplement for regular exercisers." Other new published research focused on Oligonol to enhance endurance and fight inflammation. For more information on Maypro, visit Maypro.com or Booth #15035 at SupplySide West.
CERAMOSIDES™, from SEPPIC Inc., is a new natural active complex for cosmeceuticals that will be introduced at SupplySide West. CERAMOSIDES is a unique and patented complex of two main lipidic species: ceramides that reach the skin (traced by a radiolabelling method) where they participate in the synthesis of endogeneous ceramides and consequently to skin hydration, and DGDG, which contributes to CERAMOSIDES’ efficacy by improving ceramides’ metabolism and absorption. CERAMOSIDES can bring a synergistic effect to many other ingredients thanks to its unique results on the skin within 15 days. Two grades are available: a free flowing powder (recommended dosage: 30mg a day) and a low viscous liquid (70mg a day) and are fitted to any type of dosage form. This innovative natural ingredient can be incorporated in any nutraceutical or cosmeceutical formulation to improve skin moisturization, to reduce skin roughness, improve skin elasticity for an anti-aging effect. CERAMOSIDES can also be used in UV products, atopic dermatitis treatment, sensitive skin products and eye dryness/vaginal dryness products. Introduced in 2007 by Biothera, Wellmune WGP® is a proprietary baker’s yeast beta-glucan that primes innate immune cells that help keep the body healthy. This immune health ingredient is the focus of a wide range of collaborative research initiatives that have resulted in 30 peer-reviewed articles since 2001. In 2010-2011 there were six publications or scientific conference presentations presenting original clinical data on Wellmune WGP. All of these well-designed human clinical trials consistently demonstrated significant health benefits, including improved physical health, reduced upper respiratory tract infection symptoms and improved well-being. This technology has captured mainstream scientific community interest, as evidenced by the April 2011 cover story in the journal Nature further elucidating the mechanism of action of Wellmune WGP. Biothera’s research collaborations include leading institutions, such as the University of California Los Angeles Medical Center, Scripps Institute, Southampton University Hospital (UK), University of Louisville, Ohio State University and University of Houston.
