PHOENIX—VIRGO announced the 15th annual SupplySide West, Oct. 10 to 14 at The Venetian & Sands Expo in Las Vegas, will include more than 1,300 booths in the exhibit hall and more than 100 hours of educational opportunities.
"We are pleased that this will be the largest SupplySide West to date as we celebrate our 15th anniversary," said Peggy Jackson, executive vice president of VIRGO’s Health & Nutrition Network.
The education program, sponsored by BASF, kicks off on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Education advisors from Bayer Consumer Care AG, General Nutrition Corp. (GNC), Bausch & Lomb, Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, Sara Lee, Kraft Foods, The Hersey Co., Avon Products, Johnson & Johnson, Amway and many more leading companies assisted in the development of the program. Highlights include:
- Joy Bauer, MS, RD, CDN, nutritionist and diet expert for NBC’s Today show, monthly columnist for Woman’s Day magazine and best-selling author, will be the featured speaker on Wednesday, Oct. 12.
- Silliker Inc.’s Sharrann Simmons will discuss the impact of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) on dietary supplement manufacturers
- Datamonitor's Tom Vierhile will look at personalized nutrition and the future of functional foods.
- Steven French, managing partner for the Natural Marketing Institute (NMI), will focus on the top trends driving innovation in the food/beverage, ingredient and supplement markets.
- A panel session will examine the importance of advanced planning for successful transplantation of a product and claim from one regulatory venue to another.
- Martin Last, chairman of the Health Food Manufacturers Association, will focus on EU legislation and the impact it will have on the natural products industry.
- FDA’s Bradford W. Williams will provide an update about dietary supplement GMP (good manufacturing practice) inspections.
- A panel session featuring Michael Hammer from PepsiCo and David Del Pozo from The Coca-Cola Co. will discuss how research & development, product development, ingredients, and marketing converge to build a beverage brand.
- John Foley of BASF will look at trends and best practices in coloration and how they can apply to products
- Personal Care Products Council’s Glenda Williams will provide an update and overview of cosmetic regulations around the world.
- Rebecca James Gadberry, chairman and CEO of YG Laboratories and an instructor in cosmetics in the Department of Humanities, Sciences, Social Sciences and Health Sciences at UCLA Extension, will examine the role of algae for next generation skin care.
There are more than 40 sessions in the education program. Additional seminars will cover topics such as quality control challenges, traceability in preventing recalls, clinical trials, product endorsements, advertising regulations, healthy aging, controlling food allergens, functional/natural ready-to-drink beverages, and innovations in skin care. Open to all registrants, 40 vendor-sponsored seminars, VendorWorks, will cover a wide range of innovative ingredients, technologies and services. Poster presenters will be at their displays to answer questions on Oct. 13 from noon to 1 p.m.
Official GMP Training Presented by NSF-DBA
Based on FDA’s initial inspections, SupplySide’s GMP training offers content designed for real-world applications. The first course, “21 CFR 111 – Dietary Supplement GMP Overview," is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon. The second course, “GMP Vendor Qualification & Auditor Training," is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon. The third course, “Stability Program Development," is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The fourth course, “Batch Production Records – Do’s and Don’ts," is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon.
Six Workshops Announced
The “Functional Food Product Development: Market Regulations, Bioactive Compounds and Their Utilization" presented by Smart Short Courses will be offered on Monday, Oct. 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, Oct. 11, the “Superfruit Update: Science, Consumers and the State of the Category" workshop will be offered from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The “2nd Annual Palm Fruit Bioactives Workshop: Advancing Market Potentials of Palm Bioactives Through Scientific Discoveries," developed and sponsored by the Malaysian Palm Oil Council, is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Integrative Healthcare Insider will present “Health Practitioners and Supplements: Channel Data, Strategies and Opportunities for Growth" on Wednesday, Oct. 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. The workshop is sponsored by EpiCor®.
Two workshops are set for Friday, Oct. 14, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The “IPA Probiotic Update: Insights & Perspectives from the Physician, Regulator, and Market Analyst" workshop was developed with the International Probiotics Association (IPA) and is co-sponsored by CHR Hansen A/S, Danisco USA Inc., Institut Rosell-Lallemand, Morinaga Milk Industry Co. Ltd., Nutraceutix Inc. and Wakunaga of America Co. Ltd. The “GOED Exchange Update: Regulatory and State-of-the-Market Issues for EPA and DHA Omega 3" workshop was developed by the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega 3 (GOED) and is co-sponsored by Aker BioMarine, Golden Omega and The Scoular Company.

NDI Guidance Town Hall
On Wednesday, Oct. 12, SupplySide West will host a special town hall event covering FDA’s Draft Guidance on New Dietary Ingredients (NDIs). The event is free to all SupplySide West attendees. Invited speakers and panelists represent FDA, American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), Natural Products Association (NPA), and United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA).
Networking Events
SupplySide West also provides a variety of networking opportunities, beginning with the SupplySide West Golf Classic, sponsored by Pharmachem Laboratories. The popular tournament will returning to The Revere Golf Club on Oct. 11 and includes a $25,000 hole-in-one contest.
The networking continues the evening of Oct. 11 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with the Manufacturers Welcome Reception, co-sponsored by Draco Natural Products and Lesaffre Human Care. Hosted bar and hors d’oeuvres are included. Additional registration is required. The Opening Reception, sponsored by DSM Nutritional Products and Vitamin Angels, is returning to Tao Nightclub in The Venetian. The event begins after the exhibit hall closes on Wednesday, Oct. 12.
The SupplySide Scientific Excellence Awards will be presented in the VIRGO booth at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Awards will be presented to Maypro Industries for Olignol®, SEPPIC Inc., for CERAMOSIDES™, and Biothera for Wellmune WGP®.
On Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 3 p.m., SupplySide West will celebrate the show’s 15th anniversary with cake and a champagne toast at the VIRGO booth. VIRGO will also recognize the 20th anniversary of Food Product Design with cake and a champagne toast at the VIRGO booth on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m.
