MONTREAL—Institut Rosell-Lallemand announced two studies featuring the probiotic preparation ProbioKid® will be presented by Prof.Mario Cazzola, chief of the respiratory clinical pharmacology unit at the University of Rome ‘Tor Vergata’ at the congress of respiratory medicine: the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Annual Congress, Sept.18 to 22 in Barcelona, Spain. More than 18,000 experts of the respiratory field attended the ERS congress last year.

This year’s schedule includes:

Monday, Sept. 20, Hall 1 (Madrid):

  • Session 196: Immune modulation of airways diseases; 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
  • 8:45 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. “Immunomodulatory impact of a synbiotic in TH1 and TH2 models of infection”  M. Cazzola, T. A. Tompkins, M. G. Matera (Rome, Italy; Montreal, Canada)

Wednesday, Sept. 22, Hall 3 (Brussels):

  • Session 478: Childhood pneumonia: from prevention to complications 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
  • 9:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. “Efficacy of a synbiotic supplementation in the prevention of respiratory and intestinal diseases in children: A randomized, double-blind placebo controlled study” M. Cazzola, N. Pham-Thi, S. Bohbot (Rome, Italy; Paris, Chenôve, France)

The first presentation is a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study conducted in France to evaluate the effects of ProbioKid preparation on the incidence of infectious episodes in children during the winter period. The promising results of this clinical work are backed by mechanistic and pre-clinical studies that showed the ability of this particular probiotic preparation to influence the different types of immune response (Th1 and Th2), with potential implications in the management and prevention of allergic diseases such as asthma. Results of both studies will be presented at the ERS Annual Congress. Further information about the studies will be released after the Congress.

On Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., Institut Rosell-Lallemand is holding a press conference in Barcelona (ERS Media Center) on the topic: Potential of Probiotics in Respiratory Medicine: example of ProbioKid® studies. The guest speaker will be Prof. M. Cazzola.
