GRANADA, Spain—Working off the hypothesis bovine glycomacropeptide (GMP) is therapeutic in intestinal inflammation, possibly by affecting lymphocytes, University of Granada researchers studied GMP on rat splenocytes in vitro and in vivo, comparing the intervention with bovine serum albumin and lactoferrin. Published in Biochemical Pharmacology (2010;79(12):1797-1804), the results showed GMP demonstrated effect on several inflammatory markers, such as TNFalpha, iNOS and COX2 expression. It also augmented the inflammatory mediators interleukin-1 (IL-1) and interferon-gamma. The scientists concluded, “[The] results support the hypothesis that GMP may limit intestinal inflammation acting at least in part on lymphocytes.”
