PITTSBURGH—Crons, a manufacturer of sports apparel, is expanding its operation into the nutrition industry, starting with the launch of nutrition bars. Darren Rovell reported for CNBC about the move by Pat Cavanaugh, a former point guard at Pitt, and CEO of Crons, a leading maker of uniforms and sports apparel.

Cavanaugh told Rovell he expects the protein bar business to hit $1 million in sales next year, with plans to market the Crons Come Ready Performance Protein Bars directly to the high school and college athletes and teams the company already serves. The bars are NCAA compliant and formulated to have 24 g of protein and high fiber with no sugar alcohols; Cavanaugh also went with unconventional flavors—Cake Batter and Cookies & Cream.

According to the Crons Web site, the company is also offering natural bottled water—which can be personalized with a team’s logo—and will soon launch energy drinks and dietary supplements to the nutritional products line.
