SAN DIEGO—Quality Assurance International Inc. (QAI), a provider of organic certification for food and personal care products, has earned International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 Environmental Management Systems Standard registration.

ISO 14001 registration verifies that QAI has effective procedures in place to monitor and continuously improve its environmental performance. To obtain ISO 14001 registration, QAI reduced energy and raw material use; implemented a paperless documentation and billing management system; developed a recycling program for paper, plastic containers and bags, electronics, mercury-containing light bulbs, and batteries; and developed composting program for coffee grounds, tea bags, and fruit/vegetable food scraps.

“QAI has been a leading advocate for organics and the environment for over 20 years, and we believe it’s important to demonstrate this commitment throughout every aspect of our organization,” said Kristen Holt, QAI president. “ISO 14001 registration helps us establish earth-friendly practices, from recycling to utilizing a paperless system, which aligns with our core mission to support organic agriculture and create a more sustainable future. By implementing a paperless document management system, we will be able to reduce our paper usage 90 percent by 2012.”
