WASHINGTON—The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plans to remove the artificial sweetener saccharin from its list of "hazardous wastes, hazardous constituents and hazardous substances," because it is not longer considered hazardous to human health, reported the Los Angeles Times.

Saccharin was added to the list in the 1980s and the article in the L.A. Times said research on the sweetener in the 1990s found it wasn’t harmful to humans. The article also provides links to a list of saccharin toxicology studies in humans, animals or cells in dishes provided by the National Toxicology Program. Another link in the article follows a petition made by the Calorie Control Council, a trade group that represents the low-calorie and reduced-fat food and beverage industry, that asks to remove saccharin from the harmful wastes list.
