MIAMI— European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) panel member Dr. Henk Van Loveren joined more than 220 delegates from the global probiotic industry at the International Probiotics Association (IPA) 2nd World Congress this past week, here. The IPA and its members had been waiting for access to EFSA, which have been elusive to date, according to insiders.

“This was the IPA’s first step in what we hope will become a co-operative effort between the probiotic industry and EFSA in establishing a reasonable environment for health claims evaluation,” said Scott Bush, president of IPA.

Held April 16 to 17, the IPA World Congress featured internationally recognized scientific and medical experts who presented the latest findings on probiotic biotechnology, microbiome research and clinical benefits that have been demonstrated from probiotic supplementation. The meeting was CME approved for healthcare professionals.
