WESTCHESTER, N.Y.—Dietary supplements promoted for their ability to support healthy cholesterol levels or lower cholesterol generally deliver ingredients such as phytosterols or policosanol. In its latest product review, ConsumerLab.com tested several dietary supplements containing phytosterols and/or policosanol, with all tested products meeting label claims for active ingredients. However, one phytosterol product did not break apart during testing of dissolution.

ConsumerLab includes the names of companies involved in the reviews in its general news releases, but doesn’t indicate which ones passed or failed testing, nor the levels of active ingredients in the products. However, the reports with complete findings are available for purchase from ConsumerLab.

The report on cholesterol products provides findings for seven supplements randomly selected for testing, as well as five additional products that passed the same testing under ConsumerLab.com’s Voluntary Certification Program, whereby companies can pay to have their products tested by ConsumerLab. In addition, ConsumerLab’s report covers the state of the science on several cholesterol-lowering ingredients including fish oil, garlic, niacin and soy.
