EDISON, N.J.—The majority of consumers, 63 percent, believe they are missing omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) in their diet, according to a new survey conducted by Equation Research for Croda, the supplier of PureMax fish oil. Despite the concern, only 26 percent of respondents take omega-3 fish oil dietary supplements to augment their dietary intake. Among the concerns cited as barriers to purchase are cost, lack of perceived need and quality concerns; in fact, 94 percent of shoppers look for assurances of purity when selecting dietary supplements.
“Supplementation is an important option to help Americans achieve the nutrients they need in order to reduce the impact of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease,” said Joseph D. Brasco, M.D., Center for Colon and Digestive Disease and author of “Restoring Your Digestive Health.” “It is essential that the public be provided with simple and easy-to-understand information about purity and the source of product, appropriate dosing and how and when to add supplements to a healthy diet so that we can better use nutrition to stave off disease.”
