EUSTIS, Fla.—Valensa International is offering free analysis and product profiling to nutraceutical producers interested in ensuring the quality of the saw palmetto extracts they use. Analysis will be conducted at Valensa’s laboratories in Eustis, Fla., with profiling based on the U.S. Pharmacopeia’s (USP) monograph on saw palmetto extract. The USP monograph includes standards for total fatty acids, fatty acid profile, total fatty alcohols and phytosterol levels, as well as the ratio of the concentration of lauric acid to concentration of constituent fatty acids. Testing will be conducted on saw palmetto extracts only, and not on standardized powdered saw palmetto extract or dried ground berry powders, which offer a number of quality testing issues. Numbered samples can be submitted to Valensa, which will return results within ten days of sample receipt.
“There is an objective standard for saw palmetto that is based on years of studying the makeup of mature saw palmetto berries and their extracts, the only saw palmetto product that has been shown to be safe and effective in dealing with the symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH),” said Sid Hulse, vice president of sales and marketing at Valensa. “If we want consumers to take us seriously about the issue of quality, we should use this objective standard. With this new free program, there is no reason not to deliver the best product to consumers.”
