VitaGranateŽ Activates PON1

07/11/2008

MOMENCE, Ill.—According to a recent, unpublished in-house study conducted by FutureCeuticals, VitaGranate® (from FutureCeuticals), a pomegranate extract, has potential for the management of negative health conditions associated with reduced Paraoxonase 1 activity. Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is a high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-associated enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of lipid peroxides in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and HDL. Candidate PON1-activating materials were combined with a PON1-substrate and exposed to human serum. Fluorescence resulting from substrate cleavage was then compared to the fluorescence obtained from the same serum that was not exposed to the stimulatory materials. PON1 was assayed using a standard, commercially available kit from Invitrogen. VitaGranate stimulated PON1 activity under the experimental conditions. The range of activation within concentrations of 0.001 percent to 0.1 percent was 3 percent to 47 percent. As the concentration of VitaGranate increased, the activity of PON1 in human serum ex vivo increased.
