Tonalin® CLA Aids Fat Oxidation

LA GRANGE, Ill.—Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) may increase fat oxidation and energy expenditure during sleep, according to a new study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Am J Clin Nutr. 2007;86(3):797-804). Researchers recruited 23 subjects from a primary efficacy study on CLA (as Tonalin® CLA, from Cognis Nutrition & Health) who were receiving either 4 g/d of 78 percent active CLA isomers or 4 g/d of safflower oil. The substudy found a difference in the change in fat utilization between the CLA (4 ± 8 g) and placebo (–7 ± 11 g) groups during sleep after six months of supplementation. In addition, the percentage of energy from protein was reduced during sleep in the CLA group (CLA: –3.3 ± 2.6 percent; placebo: 0.3 ± 5.7 percent). Researchers also detected a difference in the change in energy expenditure during sleep (CLA: 0 ± 38 kcal; placebo: –43 ± 90 kcal). “This study confirmed the effect of CLA on fat oxidation is on body fat rather than fat from diet,” said Dale Schoeller, Ph.D., one of the study authors. “It’s important to understand how CLA positively alters fat loss and this research provides valuable insights.”
