Low GI Diets Reduce Risk of Chronic Diseases
03/13/2008
SYDNEY, Australia—A recent study at the University of Sydney (Am. J Clinic. Nut. 2008;87(3):627-637) identified 37 prospective cohort studies of glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) and chronic disease risk in published reports. Rate ratios (RRs) were estimated in a Cox proportional hazards model and combined using a random-effects model. From four to 20 years of follow-up across studies, 40,129 incident cases were identified. Significant positive associations were found in fully adjusted models of validated studies for type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, gallbladder disease, breast cancer and all diseases combined in the comparison between the highest and lowest quantiles of GI and GL. These findings support the hypothesis that higher postprandial glycemia is a universal mechanism for disease progression.
