OKINAWA, Japan—More than 300 scientists are expected to convene here June 23 to 27 for the 15th International Symposium on Carotenoids, coordinated by the International Carotenoid Society (ICS). The symposium will include several educational sessions, plenary sessions and poster presentations covering broad topics on the science of carotenoids. Event sponsors include BASF, Cognis, DSM Nutritionals, Eisai, Fuji Chemical Industry, Kemin, LycoRed, Nutrilite/Amway and more. Topics to be covered include carotenoids and sports nutrition; organic and natural products chemistry of carotenoids; photosynthesis and photochemistry of carotenoids; carotenoids for food; medical applications of carotenoids, including vision and cancer therapy; biosynthesis and metabolism of carotenoids; industrial production of carotenoids; and, for the first time at this conference, a specific track on astaxanthin. Charles DePrince, president of Fuji Health Science, said, “Although astaxanthin symposiums have been common in Japan, this will be the first time one is held at an international level. It is a true milestone for astaxanthin and a clear indication that the body of science supporting this carotenoid has finally taken the notice it deserves.”
