CRN Releases Research Results, Presents Service Awards

WASHINGTON—Approximately 68 percent of American adults say they are taking dietary supplements, up just slightly from 66 percent last year, according to a new online survey conducted by Ipsos-Public Affairs for the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN). In addition, 52 percent of Americans identified themselves as “regular” users of dietary supplements in the online survey, up from 46 percent in 2006; however, only 31 percent of respondents in a companion telephone survey from Ipsos identified themselves as “regular” users.
“This is the third year we’ve conducted the survey online and it’s interesting to start to see the consistent trends building,” said Judy Blatman, vice president, communications, CRN (www.CRNusa.org). “It’s intriguing that some of the results between Internet respondents and telephone respondents are so far apart. The psychographics of the online respondents may reflect that Internet users in general take a more active role in seeking out information about their health care, and consequently are more confident in the products they use.”
In additional news, CRN’s “Life…supplemented” campaign contributed $6,000 to Nourish America (formerly Vitamin Relief USA) to benefit the Drake University Head Start program in Des Moines, Iowa. The six individuals in whose name the contribution was made are: lifestyle expert Sissy Biggers; celebrity chef Marcus Samuelson; Men’s Fitness editor Sean Hyson; professional dancer Emmanuel Pierre-Antoine; health and fitness expert Liz Neporent; and former NFL referee and author Jerry Markbreit.
CRN also presented its “Apple Awards” during its annual conference, held Oct. 4 to 6 in Scottsdale, Ariz. The 2007 honorees were Mark Blumenthal, American Botanical Council; Randi Neiner, Shaklee Corp.; and Carolyn Sabatini, Pharmavite LLC. The awards are presented annually to individuals who have shown a long-term commitment and service to CRN and the dietary supplement industry.
Finally, CRN announced it will hold its “Day of Science” on Thursday, May 8, at the Ritz Carlton Pentagon City Hotel, located just outside Washington, D.C.
