MONHEIM, Germany—Cognis acquired an interest in InterMed Discovery GmbH and signed a cooperation agreement with the firm. Dortmund, Germany-based InterMed Discovery researches and develops active ingredients based on natural products, and owns an extensive, proprietary collection of biologically-active natural substances. The company, which was founded in 2006 as a management buy-out from Bayer HealthCare AG, works to correlate chemical structures with biological activity on a large scale, helping it identify novel active ingredients with defined applications. Under terms of the agreement, Cognis will utilize the database and technology to exclusively select, develop and market new active substances.
Norbert Weitkemper, Cognis’ director of strategic business development, nutrition and health, said, “The combination of InterMed Discovery’s natural product data and active ingredients with Cognis’ know-how and market expertise in nutrition and cosmetics creates a unique platform for the development of new, innovative products and thus strengthens our market position sustainably.”
