China Food Safety Boss Quits

09/22/2008

Continued gaffes in China's food safety program have resulted in the departure of the country's food safety leader, Li Changjiang. Despite an overhaul a year ago, the product quality watchdog agency failed to prevent the recent contaminated infant formula and milk scandals that have sickened about 53,000 infants. Again, the chemical melamine is being blamed for the kidney stones and failure in babies and is being linked to infant formula and milk from 22 Chinese dairy companies. China's cabinet approved the resignation and appointed Wany Yong as its new director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. Meanwhile, the world Health Organization (WHO) has gotten involved in sorting out China's food safety mess, advising changes to several existing policies, such as inspection-free status for certain dairy providers.
