FDA To Consider Allergy Advisory Labeling Standards

08/27/2008

Allergy warnings on food products may become clearer as the FDA and Canadian health officials are debating setting standards for allergy warning labeling, CNN reported. The push to set regulated standards has been driven by consumer confusion and lack of protection the current system of labeling is providing.  Currently, the law only requires food labels to list allergenic ingredients such as peanuts, wheat or dairy, warning labels for foods the may accidentally become contaminated are not required. A public hearing has been set for Sept. 16 by the FDA to begin developing a long-term strategy to clarify allergy advisory labeling.
