PS Improves Golf Swing

by Lisa Frazier
12/07/2007

PADERBORN, Germany—Previous clinical trials studied the effect of phosphatidylserine (PS) supplementation on physical and mental stress resistance; but, for the first time, PS, in functional food form, was investigated for its impact on golf performance (J Intl Soc Sports Nut. 2007;4:23).

In the randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study, researchers from the University of Paderborn, Germany, administered oral PS supplementation to 20 healthy, young golfers, with handicaps of 15 to 40. Stress, heart rate and quality of ball flight was evaluated pre-test, and again 42 days after daily consumption of a nutritional bar containing PS or no PS.

Supplementation with the nutritional lipid significantly increased (p<0.05) the number of good ball flights, while placebo had no effect. PS supplementation also improved stress levels during teeing-off; stress levels with the placebo group were unchanged. Supplementation did not influence heart rate in either group.
