OptiMSM® Halts Degeneration of Osteoarthritis
by Lisa Frazier
12/10/2007 SAN DIEGO—Researchers from the University of California, San Diego, presented findings at the OsteoArthritis Research Society International (OARSI) Conference, suggesting methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) may protect cartilage and reduce inflammation in osteoarthritis. According to the company, the study is slated for publication in a future issue of Osteoarthritis and Cartilage Journal. The study examined effects of OptiMSM®, a form of MSM, on healthy and osteoarthritic human knees. Results showed a reduction in cytokines and cartilage degrading enzymes, suggesting MSM may shield cartilage from progressive degeneration. Additional research is required to specify optimum dose concentration.
