Vitamin D Supply Protects Against Breast Cancer

by Lisa Frazier
11/21/2007

HEIDELBERG, Germany—Women with a higher endogenous production of vitamin D, known as serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], may have a lower risk of postmenopausal breast cancer (Carcinogenesis. Epub Oct. 31, 2007.). A population-based case-control study in Germany studied the relationship between serum concentrations of serum 25(OH)D and incidence of postmenopausal breast cancer. Included in the study were 1,394 incident breast cancer cases and 1,365 controls, matched on year of birth and time of blood collection. Serum 25 (OH)D concentration was inversely associated with postmenopausal breast cancer risk. The findings strongly suggest a better vitamin D supply, characterized by serum 25(OH)D measurement, offers a protective effect for postmenopausal breast cancer, with a stronger inverse association in women with low serum 25(OH)D concentrations.
