SupplySide West 2007 Growth in Booths, Attendance and Education Programming

PHOENIX – Virgo Publishing announced the exhibit hall at SupplySide West 2007, Nov. 6 to 8 at The Venetian & Sands in Las Vegas, will be 15-percent larger than the 2006 event with more than 1,000 booths. Attendee pre-registrations are more than twice that of 2006 pre-registration figures. Also, a fourth education track has been added to the three-day education program.

"Celebrating its ten-year anniversary this year, SupplySide West continues to be the world’s largest event for manufacturers and suppliers of healthy products," said Peggy Jackson, director of publishing, Virgo Publishing. "And this year, the strong participation of dietary supplement, food and beverage, and cosmeceutical companies has added to the exceptional growth."

Expanded Education Program

The SupplySide West 2007 education program, sponsored by Cognis Nutrition & Health, features a four-track education program, adding 10 more sessions than the program offered in 2006. The expansion allows Virgo Publishing to include more sessions focused on cosmeceutical topics, a move designed to take advantage of the company's launch of supplyside – inside cosmeceuticals magazine. Virgo Publishing also created a Cosmeceutical Science Advisory Board to help with the program; participating representatives are from Aveda Corp., Estee Lauder, L’Oréal, and Cognis Nutrition & Health.

"There is intense interest in healthy and natural ingredients among the world's leading cosmetic and personal care companies," said Jon Benninger, director of business development, Virgo Publishing. "While many of these companies have been attending SupplySide events for years, the participation from the cosmeceutical sector looks to be larger than ever."

This year's expanded education program features speakers from the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), Aveda Corp., Canaccord Adams, Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), Federal Trade Commission (FTC), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), The Natural Marketing Institute (NMI), Natural Products Association (NPA), National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), Pharmavite, The Hershey Co., University of California Los Angeles, SPINS and many more.

Highlights include:

  • A special Featured Presentation on the health benefits of omega-3s will be given by Jørn Dyerberg, M.D., chief physician and head, Aalborg Hospital, Aalborg, Denmark
  • American Botanical Council’s Mark Blumenthal will discuss the next botanicals and herbal products poised for market success.
  • Senior research scientist from Aveda Corp., Timothy Kapsner, will address organic cosmetic standards.
  • Upstream liability under the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Act to be reviewed by a staff attorney from the FTC.
  • Mark LeDoux founder, CEO and chairman of Natural Alternatives International, will lead the two-session "State-of-the-Industry" panel with the leadership of AHPA, CRN and NPA.
  • Clinical data supporting potential health benefits of cocoa and chocolate will be presented by Debra Miller, Ph.D., director of the clinical nutrition program and nutrition communications at The Hershey Co.
  • SPINS analyst Chris Chufo will review channel dynamics and overall market trends of the natural and organic body care segment.
  • Kate Peringer of The Hartman Group will examine key trends in the functional food and beverage market.

Additional seminars will cover topics such as dietary supplement funding from NIH, health benefits of exotic fruits, natural ingredients with biological activity, the future of functional beverages, consumer trends in food and health and much more.

SupplySide West also features more than 50 vendor-sponsored seminars covering a wide range of innovative ingredients, services and technologies. Some of these VendorWorks sessions will be held in the VendorWorks auditoriums in the exhibit hall. A full schedule of the VendorWorks sessions is available on the Web site. Additional research can be found at the "Science at SupplySide" poster display, which remains up throughout the show. Poster presenters will be at their displays to answer questions on Nov. 8 from noon to 1 pm.

Two Workshops and Post-Conference Intensive Available

On Tuesday, Nov. 6 from 9 to 11:30am, The Natural Marketing Institute (NMI) will present the “Zooming in on Boomers: The Impact of Baby Boomers on the Nutritional Industry” workshop, in which the latest consumer trends in healthy aging for Boomers and specific opportunities for manufacturers and suppliers will be discussed. The “Crisis Management Workshop: The Most Important Plan to Have, but Hope You Never Need” event on Tuesday, Nov. 6 from 9am to 11:30am, will be led by Marc Ullman from Ullman, Shapiro and Ullman, Sheldon Baker from Baker Dillon Group, Jonathan L. Bernstein of Bernstein Crisis Management, and Stephen S. Miller from ChemNutra. Additional registration is required for each workshop.

A post-conference intensive, “Essential Fatty Acids: The Opportunity is Now,”

is available Friday, Nov. 9 from 8:30 to 11:30am. Market trends, science and much more will be covered. Registration is $25 through Nov. 1. This event is sponsored by Accucaps, Denomega Nutritional Oils, Cognis Nutrition & Health, EPAX AS and Ocean Nutrition.

Networking Events

SupplySide West also provides ample opportunities for networking, beginning with the SupplySide West Golf Classic sponsored by Pharmachem Laboratories. The always-popular event takes place Nov. 6 at the Paiute Golf Resort and includes a $25,000 hole-in-one contest. The four-person scramble tournament generally sells out with more than 250 golfers, and separate registration is required.

The networking continues the evening of Nov. 6 with the International Welcome Reception, co-sponsored by KGK Synergize and OptiPure/Soft Gel Technologies. The event is complimentary for all international visitors and includes a hosted bar and hors d'oeuvres. Tickets for the event are $55 in advance or $75 on site. When the exhibit hall closes on Nov. 7, all SupplySide West participants are invited to attend the Opening Reception co-sponsored by DSM and INSIDER. This event attracts thousands of industry executives for continued conversation in an informal atmosphere. And finally, in the exhibit hall on Nov. 8, all event participants are invited to the Appreciation Lunch, sponsored by INSIDER, supplyside – inside cosmeceuticals and Food Product Design magazines.

SupplySide West is celebrating its ten-year anniversary in 2007 with a champagne toast and cake in the Virgo Publishing booth at 2pm on Thursday, Nov. 8. The first-ever Food Product Design and INSIDER Scientific Excellence Awards will be presented at the same time.

New to SupplySide West 2007 is a raffle to drive a Maserati for a week, sponsored by Toyo Bio-Pharma. Entrants must visit the Toyo Bio-Pharma booth to enter the drawing. The winner will be drawn at 2pm on Thursday, Nov. 8.
