Probiotics Benefit Burn Patients
Erika Camardella
BEER-SHEVA, Israel—Lactobacillus bacteria food additives may be clinically beneficial in patients with acute burns, according to a study published in Burns (2007, Aug. 33, (5) 594-598)(DOI:10.1016/j.burns.2006.09.007). 07/20/2007 Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study on 56 patients admitted to Soroka University Medical Center with burns. Of these patients, 28 were given lactobacillus supplements and 28 were not. The parameters compared between the groups evaluated the level of sepsis and its complications. Morbidity parameters (during hospitalization) were significantly higher in the treatment group; however, mortality was lower. The difference in mortality between the groups was not significant as a whole, but was significant in the subgroup analysis of those with 41- to 70-percent total body surface area burned. In this particular subgroup there were zero cases of death in the treatment group versus five cases in the control group. Researchers concluded that in acute burns, lactobacillus bacteria food additives may be clinically beneficial.
