Folate Supplements Aggravate B12 Anemia in Seniors

by Kyle Bradley
01/22/2007

BOSTON—High folate intake may mask pernicious anemia in some seniors, negatively affecting cognitive function and blood hemoglobin levels, according to a Tufts University study (AJCN, 85, 1:193-200, 2007). Researchers examined the connection between serum folate and vitamin B12 status relative to anemia, macrocytosis and cognitive impairment. Subjects had normal serum creatinine concentrations, and no history of stroke, alcoholism, recent anemiatherapy, or diseases of the liver, thyroid or coronary arteries. In general, low B12 status was associated with anemia, macrocytosis and cognitive impairment. In addition, high serum folate levels were correlated with anemia and cognitive impairment in subjects with low B12 levels; however, in seniors with normal B12 levels, high folate was protective against cognitive impairment.
