Iron-Zinc Combination Benefits Infant Health

NAKHON PATHOM, Thailand--A study conducted at the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University, Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, found combined iron and zinc supplementation is preferableto either iron or zinc supplementation alone, relative to infant health. The study was published in the American Society for Nutrition (136: 2405-2411, 2006). The researchers investigated the effects and interactions on micronutrient status and growth, using a 2 x 2 factorial design. In the trial, 609 Thai infants ages 4 to 6 months were supplemented with either 10 mg/d of iron, 10 mg/d of zinc or a combination of both for a six-month period. Results showed in Thai infants,iron supplementation improved hemoglobin, iron status, and ponderalgrowth, and zinc supplementation improved zinc status.
