TORONTO--SunOpta Inc. (NASDAQ:SKTL)(TSX:SOY) has purchased the business and assets of Purity Life Health Products, an Acton, Ontario-based manufacturer of health and beauty aids, vitamins, supplements and nutraceuticals. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but SunOpta management reported the acquisition would be immediately accretive to earnings and would form a key part of its natural, organic and specialty food distribution business in Canada.
Purity maintains warehouses, packaging and distribution operations across Canada, where it has a history of successful sales--about $50 million (USD) in annual revenues--and markets products under the brand names Nature's Harmony, Vivitas and RxBalance. The company employs 155 people.
"We are delighted to have Purity become a part of the growing SunOpta family," said David Chapman, president of Purity. "The values of SunOpta are consistent with those of Purity and we are confident that the combination of our business will serve to provide improved customer service and product offerings to our valued retail partners."
Jeremy N. Kendall, chairman and chief executive officer of SunOpta, noted his company has been distributing some of Purity's products in Western Canada for sometime. "The addition of Purity is consistent with our stated objectives to broaden the range of products that we can offer our customers across Canada, and we could not be more pleased with this acquisition," he said.
