CLA May Not Impact Weight, Lipids in Obese Men
08/12/2005
QUEBEC CITY--Canadian researchers found no benefit to lipid levels or weight loss after providing overweight and obese men with butter enriched with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). In a crossover, eight-week study, 16 overweight men consumed each of two isoenergetic diets that included a control butter low in CLA or a modified butter naturally enriched with CLA (4.22 g CLA/100 g butter fat), produced by adding sunflower oil to the diet of dairy cows. There were no differences after consuming the diets in visceral or subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue, and the higher CLA butter diet actually showed lower induction of cholesterol reduction than the control diet. The researchers therefore concluded natural enrichment of butter did not induce beneficial metabolic effects in overweight men. The study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (82, 2:309-19, 2005).
