Dietary Fiber Intake May Prevent Type II Diabetes

BOSTON--Diets that contain high glycemic index (GI) foods and low amounts of dietary fiber may put women at risk of developing Type II diabetes, according to a study out of the Harvard School of Public Health. Published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (80, 2:348-56, 2004) (www.ajcn.org), the new study investigated the association between glycemic index and dietary fiber, and the risk of developing Type II diabetes.

Researchers reviewed investigated food-frequency dietary information from over 90,000 women who were followed for eight years. Glycemic index was significantly associated with an increased risk of developing Type II diabetes, while cereal fiber intake decreased the risk. The researchers concluded diets high in rapidly absorbed carbs, with lower fiber intake, increase the risk of developing Type II diabetes.
