Caffeine May Reduce Diabetes Risk
01/06/2004
MORELOS, Mexico--Drinking coffee may significantly reduce a person's risk of developing Type II diabetes, according to a study published in the January issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine (140, 1:1-8, 2004) (www.annals.org). The prospective cohort study involved more than 125,000 male and female subjects who were free of diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease at the start of the study. Subjects were followed for an average of 15 years, during which time 5,418 subjects developed Type II diabetes. Once coffee consumption was assessed by questionnaire, researchers found an inverse association between coffee intake and Type II diabetes. After adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI) and other risk factors, they concluded long-term coffee consumption may reduce Type II diabetes risk. It is the first study to examine the long-term relationship between consumption of coffee and other caffeinated beverages and Type II diabetes, according to the researchers.
