WASHINGTON--On July 10, a nine-member panel of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations unanimously passed a motion to subpoena three Metabolife executives to testify as part of the committee's investigation into ephedra-containing dietary supplements. The three employees are Michael Ellis, founder, co-owner and former president; David Brown, former president; and Daniel Rodriguez, a current employee.
Billy Tauzin (R-La.), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, signed the subpoenas and expects they will be issued quickly, according to Reuters. Reportedly, the panel expects the three men to testify July 23.
"Metabolife, a leading dietary supplement company, appreciates the opportunity to present a compelling case in favor of dietary supplements and their use before Congress," said company spokesperson Jan Strode in a written statement. "The company has been cooperating with the House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce in their inquiries about dietary supplements and ephedra, and looks forward to having its senior officials, including Russell Schreck, CEO of the company, testify at a hearing on July 23rd."
