Supplement Combo May Improve Recovery From Heart Surgery
08/31/2001
AMSTERDAM--In the Sept. 1 issue of The Lancet (358:696-701, 2001) (www.thelancet.com), researchers found that the combination of L-arginine, omega-3 fatty acids and a yeast improved post-operative recovery from heart surgery. Researchers, led by Robert Tepaske, M.D., from the University of Amsterdam, conducted a prospective, randomized study with 50 patients 70 years and older, administering either a daily placebo or a nutritional supplement containing L-arginine, omega-3s and yeast RNA. Patients took this combo at least five days before undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery. Participants receiving the dietary supplement experienced a stronger immune response, fewer postoperative infections and better renal function compared to those who had received placebo. No adverse events were reported from taking the supplement.
