Flavonoids May Diminish Cancer Risk
04/03/2000
SAN FRANCISCO--A recent study conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) showed that flavonoids may inhibit the growth of human cancer cells. KGK Synergize Inc. presented the results at the American Chemical Society here on March 30. The study focused on 22 flavonoids found naturally in orange and tangerine juice. It found that the flavonoids' synthetic counterparts inhibited the growth of colon cancer cells and may help combat lung and prostate cancer. Dr. David Ringer of the American Cancer Society said these findings showed that flavonoids are promising chemo-protective compounds, but more research is needed to determine how they metabolize in the body.
