Digestive Aids and Enzymes Webinar

In the first part of this Webinar, Chris Chufo will review the channel dynamics and overall market trends behind the sales of digestive aids and enzymes within the context of the supplements department. She’ll drill down to the subcategory, ingredient and brand level, pointing out new product trends across the segment. Digestive aids and enzymes are a $373 million industry, growing 15%+ a year. The fiber products and laxatives subcategory is showing the highest dollar sales, but prebiotics and probiotics are the key growth areas in this segment, growing at double the rate of the category as a whole.

In the second part of this presentation, Rohit Medhekar, Ph.D., will discuss the three main applications of enzymes in dietary supplements: 1) digestion 2) systemic and 3) targeted nutrient delivery. He will discuss the enzymes involved in each of these applications and provide a brief history of oral enzyme usage as well as the future directions.

Speakers

Chris Chufo has been a senior analyst at SPINS for three years, focusing on the data analysis and business planning needs of supplement manufacturers and other vendors. Her background includes running four Whole Foods Market stores, as well as supplement buying for Whole Foods Market and Elephant Pharmacy. Chufo offers a deep understanding of key industry trends and insight into successful brand management in the natural segment.

Rohit Medhekar, Ph.D., is currently the director of scientific affairs for National Enzyme Company. Medhekar earned both his bachelor’s of science and his master of science degree in chemistry from the University of Bombay. He went on to earn his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Iowa. While obtaining his doctorate, Medhekar was awarded the Center for Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing Fellowship. He also has authored several publications pertaining to the structure and function of enzymes. He is presently involved in the characterization of fungal enzyme activities, the effects of enzymes on botanical compounds, and the application of enzyme products to specific health needs.
