The Gulls of AT&T

I recently took a business associate to see the San Francisco Giants play the Oakland A’s at AT&T Park in San Francisco. It was his first game at this beautiful stadium. Great place to see a game or other type of event. I saw the Rolling Stones perform there several years ago. While Tony Bennett sings I Left My Heart in San Francisco after each Giants win, around the seventh or eighth inning win or lose, an interesting phenomenon begins. Gulls (western gulls to be exact), start to show up. They hover and fly overhead, mostly surrounding the outfield. Do they really know what inning it is or just checking out the score? Truth is, they’re scavengers and they smell the leftovers left by fans. If you walk around the inside of the stadium and exit through the Marina Gate you’ll see the gulls up close and personal. By the dozens they congregate in the bleachers. My associate couldn’t believe his eyes. According to the Audubon Society those birds have an average wing span of 55 inches and average length of 21 inches at maturity.

Those white and grey birds are quite a sight to see. So were the Giants that night as they won 6-2.

If you’re in San Francisco during the baseball season, check it out. And enjoy the game!
