It may be like pulling teeth to get clients to expand their social media marketing opportunities. But the more I see and hear, the more I’m convinced social media and social media marketing is here to stay, albeit in various forms.

Talking with a member of the Clovis Chamber of Commerce, a new job description they’re hearing about in California’s Central Valley is social media manager. Several hospitals and Fresno State University have hired full-time personnel to handle Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social networking responsibilities. Even companies that feel they don’t need a full-time person yet to take on these responsibilities are hiring marketing firms and consultants. Titles and job responsibilities vary from company to company. But the need is there. At one university, I heard a social media manager is overseeing 16 Facebook pages.

Those organizations embracing social media as a key part of their marketing believe this is the way of the future. Many social media folks are also starting to get into video—a topic I will cover in-depth in a future MarketTonic item. Suffice to say, video allows so many opportunities to promote your company on your Web site as well as reach out to sites that target your potential customers. It’s been become an alternative to so many traditional advertising and publicity forms such as a 60-second commercial, media tour and press release.
