167,349. That’s how many utility patents the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued in 2009. It’s a weekly average of 3,218. 4,385. That’s the weekly average of utility patents issued per week in April 2010. It’s a 36 percent increase over the 2009 weekly average. If the USPTO keeps that pace, we’re looking at 220,000 utility patents issued for 2010. That’s 50,000 more utility patents than 2009—the largest yearly increase ever. If R & D has come up with any inventions, explore patenting as the legal monopoly can pay big dividends.
