Chromax® Shows High Bioavailability
07/02/2007
COLUMBUS, Ohio—
Chromium picolinate (as Chromax®, from Nutrition 21) demonstrated significantly higher absorption in the body than other forms of chromium (J Trace Elem Med Biol, 21, 2:120-4, 2007). The study, conducted by The Ohio State University (OSU) Department of Human Nutrition, Columbus, compared absorption of four different types of commercially available forms of nutritional chromium at a dose of 200 mcg: Chromax chromium picolinate, chromium polynicotinate, chromium nicotinate-glycinate, and chromium chloride. The study included 12 healthy female subjects; each was assigned a single dose of 200 mcg of nutritional chromium. A crossover design was used with random order of administering the chromium supplements and one-week washout between dosings. Researchers tested the subjects’ urine, collected over 24 hours after chromium supplementation, to estimate chromium absorption. Chromium picolinate provided considerably higher mean chromium values than chromium polynicotinate, chromium nicotinate-glycinate and chromium chloride. Researchers noted the urinary chromium for chromium picolinate was almost 16 times higher than for chromium chloride, and over twice that of either of the two nicotinate-based forms.
