High-Sugar Diet Linked to Inflammation, Diabetes

NUTHETAL, Germany--High consumption of refined sugar may promote inflammation and development of Type II diabetes, according to new research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition www.ajcn.org  (82, 3:675-84, 2005).

Researchers recruited subjects from the Nurses' Health Studies I and II for a nested case-control study on 656 women with confirmed Type II diabetes and 694 controls. They associated a dietary pattern including frequent consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks, refined grains, diet soft drinks and processed meat; and infrequent intake of wine, coffee, and cruciferous and yellow vegetables, with an increased risk of Type II diabetes. The researchers concluded the dietary pattern identified in the study may increase chronic inflammation and raise the risk of developing Type II diabetes.
