Omega-3s Appear To Moderate Inflammation
08/16/2004
Omega-3s Appear To Moderate Inflammation BOSTON--A study of 727 women participating in the Nurses' Health Study I appears to link dietary intake of omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) with lower levels of inflammation and endothelial activation (Journal of Nutrition, 134:1806-11, 2004) (www.nutrition.org). Researchers from Harvard Medical School found levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were significantly lower among those women in the highest quintile of total omega-3 intake, compared to those in the lowest quintile. In addition, alpha-linolenic acid intake was inversely related to plasma concentrations of CRP and IL-6. The researchers concluded the link between omega-3 EFA intake and lower levels of inflammatory biomarkers may help explain the role of EFAs in preventing cardiovascular disease.
