Grape Seed Extract Reduces Blood Pressure

11/14/2006
LAS VEGASA new study, initially presented at SupplySide West, indicates the use of grape seed extract (MegaNatural® BP, from Polyphenolics) in conjunction with lifestyle modification may effectively lower blood pressure in patients with metabolic syndrome. The placebo-controlled trial was undertaken using 24 subjects with metabolic syndrome and hypertension. Two dosage levels, 150 mg/d and 300 mg/d, and a placebo were given to three groups of eight patients, respectively. After one month of treatment, significant reduction in blood pressure was noted in both groups given MegaNatural BP.There was no change in the group given the placebo. Also, subjects given 300 mg/d of MegaNatural BP had a significant decrease in the concentration of oxidized LDL in plasma.

“The new study results suggest that MegaNatural BP, with its strong antioxidant activity and favorable effects on blood pressure, could be of value in a lifestyle management program directed towards people who suffer from metabolic syndrome,” said C. Tissa Kappagoda, M.B.B.S., Ph.D., F.A.C.C., and director of Preventive Cardiology Program, Davis Medical Center, Sacramento.
