Lutein, Zeaxanthin Increase Macular Pigment Density

03/05/2008

ATHENS, Ga.— Four to six months of supplementation with 12 mg/d of a combination of lutein and zeaxanthin significantly increases macular pigment optical density (MPOD) and improves visual performance in glare for most subjects, according to a study published in Optometry and Vision Science (2008;85(2):82-88). Forty healthy subjects with a mean age of 23.9 were followed for six months and assessed at baseline, one, two, four and six months. Spatial density profiles of macular pigment (MP) and disability glare were measured. After six months of supplementation with a combination of OPTISHARP® Zeaxanthin and FloraGLO® Lutein (from DSM Nutritional Products), average MPOD increased from 0.41 to 0.57 and the deleterious effects of glare were significantly reduced.
