GENCINIA Aids Diabetics
01/18/2008
ANAHEIM, Calif.— A proprietary extract of Coccinia cordifolia (syn. Coccinia indicia) may help patients with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar and lower cholesterol (Diabetes Care. ePub ahead of print). In a double blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial conducted at the Institute of Population Health and Clinical Research, Bangalore, India, 60 patients with mild diabetes received 1 g/d of C. cordifolia extract (as GENCINIA™, from Gencor Pacific) for 90 days. Patients receiving the extract had a significant decrease in fasting and postprandial blood glucose, decreasing by 16 percent and 18 percent, respectively, at 90 days. Intervention also reduced levels of glycosylated hemoglobin, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides, though the reductions were not statistically significant.
