Report on Japanese Nutraceutical Market Available
05/26/2003
Report on Japanese Nutraceutical Market AvailableTARRYTOWN, N.Y.--The Japanese market for nutraceuticals expanded by 9.6 percent in 2002 to top $21.2 billion and may reach $54 billion by 2012, according to a new market research report available from Paul Yamaguchi & Associates. The 114-page report, Nutraceuticals Japan 2003, breaks down the market into nutritional supplements (40 percent), functional foods without health claims (40 percent) and functional foods with health claims (20 percent)--also known as FOSHU (Foods for Specified Health Use). The report notes by December 2002, a total of 324 products were approved to carry FOSHU status and the market was $4.1 billion. These sales represent 21 percent of the nutraceuticals market, but only a little more than 1 percent of the $367 billion food and beverage industry in Japan. Additional chapters in the report discuss the market potential for particular dietary ingredients such as lutein, St. John's wort and glucosamine in nutritional supplements, and the market potential for non-health claim functional foods such as probiotics, functional waters, sports beverages and nutrition bars. The report is $399; specific reports on each market segment are due in mid-2003. Further details are available online (www.functionalfoodsjapan.com).
