Cognis Notifies FDA of Xangold's GRAS StatusLAS VEGAS--At the SupplySide West 2002 show here, Cognis Nutrition and Health announced it notified the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that its Xangold brand lutein esters are GRAS (generally recognized as safe) for a variety of food applications. Cognis self-affirmed Xangold as GRAS earlier in 2002 with a panel of independent experts, and a voluntary notification was submitted to FDA after this process. "Now that Xangold has GRAS status for use in certain foods, manufacturers of these foods can meet the growing demand for health-enhancing products by adding natural lutein esters, an effective source of lutein, to their functional food line," said David Eckert, North American business director at Cognis Nutrition & Health (www.cognis.com).
